Eroticising inequality: Pornography, young people and sexuality?

AIFS seminar: 10am (AEST) Thursday 11 April 2013

Over the past decade or so, pornography has become both more mainstream and more hard-core. For young people growing up in this era of ever-new and accessible technology, it is almost impossible to avoid exposure to pornography. Consumption (particularly for young men) has become normalised, and the ways young people understand and experience gender and sex are being influenced by what they (or their partners or peers) observe in porn.

Standards and protocols

Victoria CASA Standards of Practice Manual

The aim of the Standards of Practice Manual is to consolidate the professional practice of sexual assault services in responding effectively and appropriately to the needs of victim/survivors of sexual assault.

Victorian CASA Standards of Practice Manual

Protocol between CASA Forum and Office of the Public Advocate

This protocol aims to define the roles of CASA and OPA in supporting victim/survivors of sexual assault who have a cognitive disability or mental illness and to assist CASA and OPA in developing collaborative work practices that ensure the effective provision of services to victim/survivors of sexual assault who have a cognitive disability or mental illness.

Protocol between CASA Forum and Office of the Public Advocate

Responding to allegations of sexual assault in SRS

From time to time, residents living in supported residential services (SRS) may be victims of alleged sexual assault. In such instances, it is important that key individuals and organisations that may be involved in responding (including SRS proprietors, officers of the Department of Health and Centres Against Sexual Assault) have a clear understanding of their respective roles.

Responding to allegations of sexual assault in SRS: : Clarifying roles for SRS proprietors, the Department of Health and Centres Against Sexual Assault

Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse

On Friday 11 January 2013, Her Excellency Quentin Bryce, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, issued Letters Patent to appoint a six-member Royal Commission to investigate Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. The Letters Patent also define the scope and Terms of Reference for the Royal Commission.

The Victorian Centres Against Sexual Assault (CASAs) fully support the Royal Commission and offer counselling support to victims of sexual abuse by the church or government institutions. Although requests for submissions to the inquiry have not yet commenced, the CASAs will also assist victims trying to write submissions or victims involved in appearing before the Commission.

A Prospective Study of Posttrauma Adjustment After Sexual Assault

Have you experienced a sexual assault within the last 6 weeks? If so, would you be willing to participate in a research study?

This research project will investigate psychological adjustment (posttraumatic stress, depression, anxiety, substance misuse, and quality of life) after a sexual assault.

At the completion of the entire study, data will be analysed to examine levels of good/poor adjustment, how this changes over time, and whether any measures at the initial assessment predict who does not adjust well at the follow-up.
